Oh, the days of D.A.R.E.

Below is my D.A.R.E. essay from fifth grade (2003-2004). Don’t insult my intelligence, I was very proud of this essay! In fact, I was the class winner. Enjoy the most celebrated literary work I have ever composed. I want to be a kid again.

“My D.A.R.E. Essay

By: Catherine Lentz

Mrs. Walker’s Class

5th Grade

My dare Essay will be about the facts and harmful effects of marijuana. I had a very fun time with D.A.R.E., and I am delighted to do this Essay. O.K. enough with the formal stuff time to write about marijuana.

Marijuana started being used thousands of years ago, as an intoxicant and medicine all over the world. But marijuana was prohibited in the U.S. in the early nineteen hundreds by state and local laws. But was prohibited by federal law since 1937. Even though these laws where made people used marijuana in the 60’s and 70’s,especially people My age. Between the time of 1969 and 1978, federal and many state governments reduced the charges for small amounts of marijuana from a felony of misdemeanor. That is some of the history of marijuana in the U.S.A. Now to why people use marijuana (don’t know WHY they do).

Almost all the people who use marijuana use it because they think it will make them smarter (if you know anything about marijuana you would know that is obviously not true) and out of curiosity. Now that I told you why they take marijuana, I’ll tell you a little about the harmful effects. When someone takes marijuana, that person is *(cue the underlining) putting their life in risk.* Remember that. Also, when he or she takes marijuana, they will get slow reflexes, and can not think strait. Otherwise meaning can not think of new ideas or concentrate on anything. Some people though that marijuana would help with nausea, vomiting, and the loss of appetite, which often occurred in cancer and in AIDS.

Now that you know about why people use marijuana, the harmful effects of it, and the history of it, I will tell you about marijuana, just plain ol’ marijuana. Marijuana has many different names such as weed, pot, grass, and even cannabis, which is short for cannabis sativa, the scientific name for Hemp. Usually someone would think marijuana being smoked, but it can also be mixed in food or beverages. Marijuana is actually the leaves and top flower of the Hemp plant. Weird isn’t it I thought of marijuana as a whole plant but its just part of it. Did you know that marijuana is sort of like cigarettes? It has over 400 chemicals and when smoked produces over 2,000 chemicals that enters the body through the lungs.

Did you like my essay? I’m not trying to brag or any thing, but I think it was good. I hope you learned a lot from it cause I did. I am REALLY glad that we got the printer working in time. Well there you have it one of my best essays in record time.

Love D.A.R.E.

But hate drugs!

P.S. (Like my motto!)”

Friedrich Ruckert

One of my new music major friends opened my eyes to an incredible German poet, Friedrich Ruckert.
Here is one of his works, with the translation, of course.

In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied.

"I am lost to the world"

I am lost to the world

with which I used to waste so much time,

It has heard nothing from me for so long

that it may very well believe that I am dead!

It is of no consequence to me

 Whether it thinks me dead;

 I cannot deny it,

for I really am dead to the world.

I am dead to the world's tumult,

And I rest in a quiet realm!

I live alone in my heaven,

In my love and in my song!

Brad Mehldau, one of the most incredible jazz pianists I’ve ever heard of. That is all.

I saw this via Facebook, so touching. I am really glad I took the time to watch this. Yes, I cried.

jusqu-icitoutvabien:

This is the first time I’ve watched this video in at least a year and a half. I may have posted it at some point when I first started tumblr, but thats besides the point. While this may be unbearably sad, it is one of the most beautiful and fitting portraits of someone’s life that I have ever seen. It makes you feel for everyone involved. This dog had an impact on so many people and it is so touching to watch it documented so beautifully. Ever since I watched this the first time it has given and entirely new dimension to the song Big Red Machine, by Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessener, to the point where every time I hear about it I recall this video and I immediately associate the song with beauty. Please watch it if you have the time.
